Bureau Veritas delivered safety training to Mongolian Airlines personnel

Bureau Veritas supports airlines and operators worldwide since 1922. Amongst the support we can deliver is training. Safety training is a top priority at all levels of an airline’s operations to prevent any incident, accidents and to unable operations to run as smoothly as possible at the highest level of performance.

Most recently one of our experts, Timothé du Suau de La Croix, Aviation Safety Expert, delivered a tailor-made pack of training sessions to MIAT Mongolian Airlines

Let’s hear from his experience: 

Timothé can you briefly introduce the context and objectives of this training session?
MIAT Mongolian Airlines is the National Flag Carrier of Mongolia, headquartered in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. It operates scheduled services to 21 international destinations with 9 aircraft. The airline plays a central role in Mongolia’s strategic ambition to increase international tourism and intends to position as a commercial hub in the region by 2025. In this context MIAT wishes to guarantee a high level of training of its operational personnel. They have called upon Bureau Veritas’s services to establish of full week’s training customized to their need to ensure and maintain the highest level of safety of its operations through this growth.

What were the key points and main topics covered during this training? Can you give us some concrete examples of the topics addressed? 
The training week was 5 full days divided into several modules: PART CAMO, Human Factors, Advanced Airline Safety Management Systems and Ramp Inspection (SAFA program). Thanks to my experience as an aviation safety expert working with several airlines, I was able to provide concrete examples and case studies to MIAT’s personnel to best illustrate the different challenges they could come across.

Among the trainees who attended this training, what profiles and roles did they represent within the airline company? Was the training mainly technical or more focused on procedures and risk management? 
The trainees came from a wide range of different functions within the airline’s operations, from field personnel such as mechanics to management level positions involved in continuous improvement. The training sessions were both theoretical and technical. I lead several workshops that birthed very productive informal discussions on important safety topics. As a trainer my role and my challenge with this particular type of training is to address multi-disciplinary actors and optimize the transfer of skills at all levels of the organization. 

From your perspective, what were the main realizations or the most significant changes in perception for these professionals after your training in their day-to-day activities?
MIAT trainees were able to, I think, strengthen their vision and their methods in safety aspects through a training that reflected practices within European and Asian organizations. As far as I am concerned as the trainer, I was able to truly appreciate the quality of the exchanges we had based on the solid experience of MIAT personnel, all in the pleasant framework of a well-equipped organization.

To conclude, in general what would be your key advice and recommendations regarding aviation safety training for airlines and operators?
From my experience of the last 10 years training is not only compulsory, but essential to maintain high standards and ensure continuity of skills as the workforce evolves. Beyond that, I am convinced that face-to-face training allows greater adaptability of the training as well as a real involvement from the trainees. E-learning or “fast-training” as I call it, can never replace the quality training of a trainer coming to your facilities, observing, having the necessary hindsight, and sharing real life experience and on-the-field advice. 
My message to airlines and operators worldwide: invest in your staff’s training, SMS & quality training, to really reduce human factors risks, optimize your costs and eventually reduce the risk of accidents. #boostyourteam
